Karley Yergler pitched two innings of hitless and scoreless relief on Tuesday and earned the win after the Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to eliminate Effingham from the Mahomet-Seymour Class 3A softball sectional, 8-6.

The teams had split their two regular-season meetings.

Yergler was summoned in relief of Aubrie Shore, who yielded just two singles in five innings, but had matching totals for walks and strikeouts (seven).

Shore and Julia McNaught each went 2-for-4 to lead the Bulldogs’ offensive attack.

McNaught drove in three runs. McNaught’s two-out double in the bottom of the sixth snapped a 6-6 tie and accounted for the game-winning run for M-S. Abigail Akers had two RBI. Shore scored two runs.

M-S (19-10) is on the verge of the third 20-win season in the history of the softball program and the first since the 2013 squad set a school record by winning 22 games.

The Bulldogs return to action at 11 a.m. on Saturday against Charleston in the regional championship game on the M-S field. The schools split their regular-season series with each winning by at least a 10-run margin.

In Tuesday’s other sectional semifinal contest, Charleston shut out Mattoon, 11-0.

M-S is seeking a second consecutive regional crown in softball and the fifth in the history of a program that started 45 years ago.
